Sometimes it gets me down that the world has been so thoroughly explored. I know there are arguments against this - that most of the ocean HASN’T been explored, and I’m constantly fascinated by the things that seem impossible scientists pull up, discovery after discovery. And I know there are very secluded rainforests which are still introducing to us new and strange species. But my favourite part of starting a video game based on exploration, especially with documentation - think the Pokedex or the Plants versus Zombies Almanac - is discovering so many new things. As the game goes on, the new things to find run out and I lose interest. The world has always felt like this to me - that the exciting new beginning of starting fires and pith helmets in South Africa is over, that I missed it.

Recently it has dawned on me that the mind can be thought of in the same way, except that there’s still plenty left to discover. There’s still plenty left hidden in our own heads for us to discover through exploration, find, document and revel in. And with society, culture, politics and media constantly expanding and developing, so do our brains. There’s more left for me to find, much more.
